Safety relevant training

General safety training for ESO staff

Michael Böcker is providing a yearly "General Safety Training" for all ESO staff members.

Due to the fact that ESO rents offices at MPI-IPP this training is provided dealing amongst others with site safety issues you should know if you are working at the MPI-IPP site.

In addition, there is a special safety training for staff with focus on laboratories, integration hall and workshop.

The general agenda is as follows:

You are kindly invited to participate in one of the following one-hour meetings:

Please inform your supervisor accordingly.

Cryogenics Safety Training

Liquid nitrogen is inert, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, nonflammable, and extremely cold. Although nitrogen is nontoxic and inert, it can act as a simple asphyxiant by displacing the oxygen in air to levels below that required to support life. Inhalation of nitrogen in excessive amounts can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and death. Death may result from errors in judgment, confusion, or loss of consciousness that prevents self-rescue.

On 13 November 2007, special training was provided for ESO staff dealing with the following issues:

Some viewgraphs from the presentations given (by trainers from Linde AG) are available on the following topics:

First aid, fire fighting

ESO organizes regular First Aid and other safety relevant training courses. It is important that as many people as possible are trained in giving First Aid, so if you did not attend such a course yet, register! If your most recent course was taken more than 3 years ago: refresh your knowledge! Other courses deal with fire fighting (with practical exercises!) and the problems of work at high altitude. Here is a list of all courses currently planned or envisaged.

Title Fire Protection Training
Target group all ESO-Staff
Location TUM Fire Brigade Garching
Date TBD
Trainer TUM Fire Brigade, Garching
Topic Fire prevention in buildings and emergency procedures (will be held in English)

If you want to participate, inform your supervisor and send an email to B. Sjoeberg.

At the fire fighting training session of August 6, 2003 Frederic Derie produced a short video which gives a good impression of the way the "hands-on" training is performed.

Several training events took place for the Paranal Fire Brigade - more information is here

Bob Fosbury took some pictures at the 2 day course in March 2007.
